February: the month of Valentine’s Day, chocolate, roses, date nights and love. For patients who are looking to bring back that spark, compounded oxytocin can be one way to enliven the mood and bring back the “love”.
A naturally-occurring peptide hormone and neuropeptide produced by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary, oxytocin is a hormone that plays many important functions in the body. Most of us may know of oxytocin’s role in female reproduction as it is produced endogenously during childbirth and lactation. Clinically, a synthetic version, Pitocin, can be injected to induce labor or strengthen uterine contractions.
What many people may not realize, however, is that oxytocin is also understood to be the “cuddle chemical” or “love and bonding hormone” as it is commonly associated with empathy, trust, and relationship building. For example, parents of newborns are encouraged to provide skin to skin contact with babies to induce production of this bonding chemical. Plus, there are less touted benefits of amorousness and desire, often leading to increased sexual activity as oxytocin levels spike during hugging and orgasm.
For patients who may be experiencing sexual dysfunction, low libido, trouble with arousal or orgasm, compounded oxytocin may prove helpful under the guidance of a prescriber. Some studies have shown that intranasal oxytocin can have an impact on the intensity of orgasm and contentment after sex.
