bpc-157 peptides

BPC-157: A Briefing for Healthcare Professionals

BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a protein found in human gastric juice that has recently been a subject of public discussion. This attention is due in part to an upcoming FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting in July, during which BPC-157 will be one of several peptides considered for inclusion on the 503A Bulks List, which would make it eligible for compounding.

BPC-157 is not currently approved by the FDA and does not have a USP-NF monograph, rendering it ineligible for compounding under existing regulations. Despite this, the peptide is still sold online as a research compound and is frequently marketed for injury recovery and tissue repair.

History and Research of BPC-157

BPC-157 is a gastric peptide originally isolated from human stomach juice in the 1990s during research on stomach-protective factors and was then synthesized to test its effects. Most of the early research came from a Croatian group that explored its effects on tissue formation, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and tensile strength in animals treated with BPC-157.1

Since then, virtually all other studies have been in animals or laboratory studies. In rats and other models, BPC-157 has been reported to accelerate healing of wounds, tendons, and organ injuries, and to counteract ulceration or drug-induced damage.2  A 2011 study reported that BPC-157 enhanced tendon fibroblast outgrowth and cell migration in vitro in rat tendons.3 Some models (e.g., ulcer healing, muscle injury, bone defects) reported improved healing when BPC-157 was given.4

Ulcerative colitis was one of the earliest conditions investigated in BPC-157 research, and it is the indication that the FDA will use to evaluate whether to include it on the 503A bulks list. Numerous animal studies have reported effects on intestinal injury, inflammation, and tissue repair.5

Despite this research, it important to note that it has only been studied in animals, and its potential therapeutic uses in humans have not been established through robust clinical evidence.6 There have been no independent clinical development or industry trial results published for human indications, and the peptide remains an experimental research compound with no approved medical use.

Safety

No serious toxicities have been reported in the available animal studies, and reviews have noted no toxic effects of BPC-157 in these experiments.6 There are no human safety trials published, so there may be unknown risks.

Regulatory Status

Although BPC-157 is commercially available from online vendors as a research peptide, these products are not subject to FDA approval and may vary in quality, purity, and composition.

The FDA previously listed BPC-157 under category 2, a designation used for substances that raise significant safety concerns or require additional evaluation, but it was removed from this list in April 2026. However, the FDA did not add it to category 1, and it is not FDA-approved nor does it have a USP/NF monograph. As a result, its regulatory status remains uncertain, and in July, the FDA will evaluate its use for ulcerative colitis and its inclusion on the 503A Bulks List.
