Compounding for Fungal & Yeast Infections
Custom dermatological compounds that are efficacious and economical.
Yeast and fungi are parts of the fungal kingdom and cause infections on the skin and in the body. Separate from bacteria and viruses, yeast and fungi require specific treatment options and compounding allows prescribers to combine medications in various dosage forms for an effective result.

Fungi are consumers in the same way that bacteria are, which means they feed on their host organisms. The fungal group includes yeast, which are single-celled fungi that can coalesce into colonies. Fungal infections tend to thrive in moist areas of the body. 1 2
Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis) is a fungal infection that typically occurs between the toes. It commonly occurs in people whose feet sweat in enclosed shoes and presents as a scaly rash that can cause itching, stinging, and burning. It can also cause breaks in the skin. It is contagious and can be spread via contaminated floors, towels, or clothing.
Vaginal Candidiasis is a vaginal yeast infection that affects three out of every four women at some point in their lifetime.
Ringworm (Tinea Manuum) is a fungal infection that typically appears as a scaly, ring-shaped area on the buttocks, trunk, arms, and legs. There is often a clear or scaly area inside the ring, perhaps with a scattering of red bumps. The rings are usually raised and/or overlapping. It is very itchy and is highly contagious through contact with infected objects or surfaces, such as clothing, towels, bedding, combs, and brushes.
Candida (Candida Albicans) is a yeast commonly found throughout the body. Oral thrush, which is more common in babies and children, presents as creamy white lesions. Vaginal candidiasis causes itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva. It may present as a burning sensation, especially during intercourse or while urinating. A thick, white, odorless discharge may be produced.
Intertrigo (Intertriginous Dermatitis) is caused by a fungus often aggravated by heat and moisture. This inflammatory condition typically arises in areas of skin folds, such as under the arms, folds of the neck or groin. Miconazole/Gentamicin/Desonide topical cream, compounded at New Drug Loft and VLS Pharmacy, can provide much needed relief.
Certain fungal infections are highly contagious, such as ringworm, which can pass from animals and people. Other types of fungal growth are usually controlled by the immune system. However, certain conditions can contribute to breakouts.
For example, Candida Albicans are typically found on the skin and inside the body of a healthy person. It is located in the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina and rarely causes disease.
In diabetics, however, higher levels of glucose in the blood make Candida overgrowth more likely, which means that, if diabetics fail to control their blood sugar, they may find themselves prone to yeast infections. Similarly, if the immune system fails, candidiasis may arise. Candidiasis is a serious bloodstream infection that can affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, and bones, among other parts of the body.

While most fungal infections do not impose a great threat of severe disease, they may cause discomfort. Immunocompromised patients are at risk of severe disease and it is prudent to consider the potential of co-morbidities as the cause of an outbreak. Treating fungal infections includes educating patients to recognize the trigger(s) or sources of reinfection. 3

Topical antifungal therapies may be compounded into a large range of vehicles. Our bases are non-irritating and offer a range of options such as sprays for weeping infections or a cream or ointment for cracked skin. At VLS Pharmacy we can prepare these bespoke solutions for you.
It is also possible to customize the mode of applying topical treatments. For example, it is often preferred to treat weeping infections with spray formulations, whereas with cracked skin, a cream or ointment is the solution of choice.
If large areas of the body must be treated with topical therapy, cost often indicates prescription choice. VLS Pharmacy & New Drug Loft will work with you to develop a cost-effective option for treating fungal infections.
